I Wanna Go To New York

One of my heroes died today. Agent Wimpy aka Anton Chekhov and the nameless guy from dozens of Union Square pranks. Here’s a picture (used without permission from Improv Everywhere) of  the Barnes and Noble on the north edge of Union Square across from the Virgin Music store that is no more, across from Whole Foods, a few doors from Paragon Sports—so many good times had in those few blocks. Walk to the corner and look right for a view of the Empire State Building, used to be able to see the twin towers from the tiny fountain which Improv gave ‘tours’ of in inflatable rafts. To my discredit I’ve even used the ‘zombie-chairs’ on the 4th floor of B&N, the scene of Agent Wimpy’s Chekhov presentation…

Union Square is one of the few places I can’t remember discovering. It was always there, a good place to go and sit on the steps at dusk and listen to street music. Whole Foods was a failsafe if not very adventuresome lunch venue. Circuit City (now gone) was there when I wanted electronics stuff, but there used to be Circuit City’s in every eastern town. The green market on the cobblestones was a hazard to skate through. And, if all else failed, the green wooden benches with skinny slats were good for a book and an afternoon. So thanks, Agent Wimpy, for smiles and proof that good people still exist. Thanks for the memories…RIP
