Steaks in Omaha

It’s Sunday again, another week behind, another ahead. In retrospect, the week passed quickly without unexpected events. Of interest to me was a visit to Warren Buffett in Omaha, Nebraska on Thursday and Friday. Nineteen NAU students, two professors, and I traveled to Phoenix Thursday morning and flew to Omaha. We went downtown to a nice steakhouse for dinner, then stayed a nearby hotel which happened to be in Iowa. Friday we got up early and toured the Nebraska Furniture Mart, which is owned by Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway. It’s a huge furniture store with 1.4 million square feet of showroom space. Then we traveled to Berkshire Hathaway for a question and answer session with Mr. Buffett. There were 5 other schools in attendance, from Boston, Wharton, Houston, St. Louis, so the audience was around 100 people strong. Nevertheless, it was an incredible opportunity. Warren is a very bright person, a great public speaker. After the Q&A we all went over to Piccolo Pete’s with Warren for another steak meal followed by root beer floats. We toured a jewelry store owned by Buffett, then went back to the airport and caught an evening flight back to Phoenix. Overall, trip was huge success—one of those once in a lifetime opportunities that I’ll remember for a long time.

Today I’ve been catching up on homework and trying to decide what I’m doing for Thanksgiving. Perhaps it’s not indecision as much as it is dissatisfaction, because I have already decided to stay in Arizona but I’m not very happy with the decision. I have a lot of assignments to do over the holiday, but a break from schoolwork would be very welcome. It’s snowing now so maybe I’ll get a chance to get the skis out over the holiday…
